The Symbol CS-1504 "keychain scanner" is available with either USB or RS232
Serial ASCII interface. In order to use the USB version of the scanner on Windows, driver
software must be installed. During installation, users of Windows/XP may receive an error
message that reads something like this:
Cannot install this hardware
An error occurred during the installation of the device
A service installation section in this INF is invalid
The problem may be that (as of this writing) the USB driver distributed by Symbol
Technologies is Version 1.09 which was not fully tested on Windows/XP. The Edgeport USB
driver used by Symbol Technologies was developed by Inside Out Networks
(www.ionetworks.com) and the latest version can be downloaded from their website. As of
this writing Version is 2.70 is the latest for Windows 2000/XP. Here is a link to download
that specific driver:
http://www.ionetworks.com/support/drivers/win2k/ip4n5270.exe
As time marches on, there will no doubt be updates and these will be named differently
(notice the "270" at the end of the filename, indicating the version number).
You may want to browse to the download directory and look for more recent versions:
http://www.ionetworks.com/support/drivers/win2k
Here is the procedure for removing your current driver and installing the new version::
- Unplug the CS-1504 scanner from the system
- Download the latest driver
- Double click on the file and extract the drivers to a location on your hard drive
- Navigate to that folder and double click on the ionetwrk.cab file and extract out the
program called edgeport.exe
- Run the edgeport.exe program and go to the advanced tab. Click on uninstall and reboot
the system when prompted.
- Once back up, plug the scanner back in and when prompted keep pointing XP to the
location where you have extracted the 2.70 drivers.
This should do the trick. If you are using a multiport USB adapter under Windows/XP,
there may be some other issues which can be corrected with a small registry update program
available from Inside Out Networks tech support. The above information was provided by the
helpful technical support staff at Inside Out Networks.
